The more you sweat during a run, the more water and sodium your body loses. It’s important to replace those lost fluids to avoid dehydration and to continue to perform at an optimal level. While listening to your body is important, thirst may not always be a sufficient red flag. For the body to function properly, it’s essential to drink enough water daily. Water helps the body to: - Maintain a normal temperature - Lubricate and cushion joints - Protect the spinal cord and other sensitive tissues - Get rid of waste Hydration is especially important during strenuous exercise and high heat, since the body loses water and [electrolytes](https://www.nike.com/a/what-are-electrolytes) through sweat. Then, 20 to 30 minutes before the run, drink another 8 ounces. - __During the run:__ During the workout, drink 7 to 10 ounces of fluid every 10 to 20 minutes. - __Postrun:__ When the run is done, drink an additional 8 ounces of fluid 30 minutes afterward, and drink 16 to 24 ounces of fluid for every pound of body weight lost during exercise.
