Florida A&M University was originally founded in 1887 as Florida Normal College for Colored Students with 15 students and two instructors. In 1953 the college was elevated to the university level. Since then, as enrollment has continued to increase, FAMU has never ceased with its goal of serving the citizens of Florida and the nation through its legacy of academic excellence with caring.

Morehouse College was founded in 1867 as the Augusta Institute in a church basement in Augusta, Georgia. The original mission was to educate freed slaves for ministry and teaching. It later moved to Atlanta and ultimately became Morehouse College in 1913. Morehouse has a rich history as a premier liberal arts college for men, producing notable leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and serving as a cornerstone of the Atlanta University Center.

The origins of Norfolk State University trace back to 1935, when it was then known as the Norfolk Division of Virginia Union University—a private Baptist institution with just 85 students. In 1942, it became the independent Norfolk Polytechnic College, then Norfolk State College in 1969 and finally gaining university status and its current name—Norfolk State University, in 1975. Founded in 1881 as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary, the school became known as Spelman College in 1924. To this day, Spelman welcomes young women to its Atlanta campus for excellent academic and leadership training. As the oldest private historically Black liberal arts institution for women, Spelman has always been a leader in the education of women of African descent.
