Florida A&M University was originally founded in 1887 as Florida Normal College for Colored Students with 15 students and two instructors. In 1953 the college was elevated to the university level. Founded in 1881 as the Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary, the school became known as Spelman College in 1924.
