Ez a Lone Pine Paiute Shoshone törzs otthona, amely hatalmas, táborozásra alkalmas területeiről ismert (Alabama Hills!), amelyek a Sierra-hegység lábánál fekszenek hatalmas gránittömbök között. Tényleg olyan az egész, mintha egy másik bolygón lenne az ember. Bár népszerű a természetjárók körében, egyszerűen nincsenek rossz táborhelyek. A családommal felszereléssel megtömött kocsival mentünk ki a hatalmas kempingterületnek egy olyan pontjára, ahol tökéletesen megvalósítható a közösségi távolságtartás. Az Alabama Hills szépsége abban rejlik, hogy a népszerűsége ellenére az ember egyedül lehet a vadonban. A többi természetjáró jelenlétére csak az esténként a távolban látható tábortüzek, és a néha elhaladó autók utalnak. A Hike Clerb nevű női túracsoport alapítójaként, amelynek a célja a természet népszerűsítése a nem fehér nők körében, azt gondolhatnátok, hogy magától értetődően érzem otthon magam odakint… nos, ez nem így van. Aludtam már luxussátrakban, és kempingeztünk lakóautóval primitív kempinghelyeken (más szóval vadkempingeztünk), de az a gondolat, hogy egyedül állítsam fel a saját sátram kint a természetben, bizonytalansággal töltött el. Legalábbis eddig a túráig. Akár először ver sátrat az ember, akár sokadszor, a titok az, hogy csak csinálni kell. Sokkal könnyebb, mint hinnétek! Valójában ez volt az első alkalom, amikor nulláról kellett táborhelyet építenem. Ezt fontos megjegyezni, mert egy, tényleg működik, és mert kettő, szeretném, ha azt vonnátok le tanulságként ebből a cikkből, hogy minden további nélkül képesek vagytok arra, hogy a barátokkal és a szükséges felszereléssel elinduljatok a saját kalandotokra. Még ha nem is kempingeztek gyerekkorotok óta (ahogy én sem), és még sosem állítottatok sátrat (ahogy én sem), menni fog. Higgyétek el! A legnagyobb akadályt néha az jelenti, hogy az embernek nincs önbizalma elindulni, és megtenni, amit kell. Nem kell túlpörgetni a dolgot: a felszerelést nyugodtan kérd kölcsön valamelyik barátodtól, vagy vedd ki egy kölcsönzőből. A táborverés után este gyönyörködtünk a tábortűzben, zenét hallgattunk, csodáltuk a csillagokat, vacsorát főztünk, pillecukrot sütöttünk, és egyszerűen csak élveztük, hogy a hegyek között vagyunk, a szabad ég alatt. A következő napon kimerészkedtünk a Death Valley Nemzeti Parkba, és megnéztük az USA legalacsonyabb pontját. Ráadásul ez a legnagyobb nemzeti park az ország összefüggő 48 államos területén. Út közben olyan nevezetességeket tekintettünk meg, mint az Artists Palette és a homokdűnék. Úgy kell elképzelni, mint egy hegyláncot, amelyet egy művész festett, mellette pedig ott van a világ legnagyobb homokozója. A látogatás végén megálltunk az egyik medencénél, és megcsodáltuk a sivatagot a felkelő telihold fényében. Az utolsó napon a táborhely közelében túráztunk, és a Mt. Whitney látványában gyönyörködtünk. A vidék tele van túraösvényekkel és felfedezendő területekkel: végigjárhatjuk a Movie Roadot, számos híres film forgatási helyszíneit, de lehetőség van boulderingre vagy a természeti képződmények megcsodálására – a választási lehetőségek száma végtelen. Miután kiélveztük a természet szépségeit, a barlangokat, megmásztunk mindenféle izgalmas képződményt, összecsomagoltunk, és visszatértünk Los Angelesbe.
