Dance Is Life

Handing it over to our Bra By editor, the queen of the curves Trina Nicole, to teach us all why dance is in fact, life.

Trina: Have you ever closed your eyes when dancing before? If not, I implore you to give it a try!

Notice how it almost feels like you’re entering a different realm – Why is that?

My understanding of this experience is because dance is energy, it’s a force, it’s life!

Sure, you can teach a rhythmic sequence to music, but what about when you just let go? How do you teach physical motion that’s in tune with your soul?

Of course, we all know the skill of dance can be taught, but within us, we all have an intrinsic connection to movement. Paired with music, it makes us smile, brings joy and makes us feel good.

Think about when you see a baby who can barely stand up on two feet, bouncing away to the vibrations of a catchy sound. Who taught them how to do that? And an even better question is, when did we learn to suppress this outwardly expression?

My point is, dance is way bigger than the 5,6,7,8 count. The energy moving through your body brings you to the present and forces you to breathe deeply. Filling your lung capacity, reminding you that you’re alive. It’s a way to bring focus, gather your attention, engage your whole self and a great tool to feel liberated- A gateway to freedom if you will.

Dance is one of the few sports that you can do on your own terms – one that doesn’t need a rule book, if you don’t want one. No matter your experience, your size, your background, or your status, it’s about creativity, connection and expression combined.

Trina Nicole: An Ode To Dance

Thank you for loving me when I didn’t love myself.

For carrying me through when my energy dwindled.

For guiding me when I felt lost.

Thank you for opening your arms when I felt ostracised.

For giving me a safe haven when I felt insecure.

And for enlightening me when self-doubt emerged.

Not only did you remind me of my power, but you allowed me to share this gift with others.

You challenged me to be the change and gave me the confidence to go at it alone, birthing The Curve Catwalk.

In short, you changed my life for the better.

I’m sorry I abandoned you when my self-esteem plummeted and my body developed in ways that were unrecognisable to me.

I was just scared and spent far too many years waiting for someone to give me a seat at the table.

Little did I know that I was capable of building my own table,

Where I could nurture a sisterhood and empower other Women,

Especially Women who look like me.

Thank you for moving me and inviting me back home.

I hope you do for others, what you have done for me.
