INSIDE THE VAULT

AIR SWOOPES II

The original Nike Air Swoopes, released in 1995, came equipped with a maximum-volume airbag and a midfoot strap for enhanced, customized fit. This hoop shoe was lightweight, durable and built for on-court traction.

The follow up, the Swoopes II, was distinctly different. “I spent a lot of time with Sheryl just getting to know her; I think that’s the best part about working with an athlete. It’s almost like the shoe designs itself once you know the person,” says original Swoopes II designer, Marni Gerber.

Removing the stability cover from the original shoe made way for a bilateral lacing system, which allowed players to be securely cinched into the shoe while taking pressure off the top of the foot. “In general she ran a lot; she was just up and down the court, so she needed this lightweight, flexible footwear,” notes Gerber.

The lacing system also allowed for bold branding in the form of an enlarged Swoosh on each upper nod to the outsole of the Swoopes I that featured an “S” shape. Whenever Swoopes soared toward the basket, the crowd would see her initials — an added dose of personality.

The similarities between the Swoopes II and the Nike Air More Money (bilateral lacing system and midsole) make this silhouette’s comeback an easy transition.
