Behind the Design: ACG Lava Flow Ultralight
In the howling cold of northern Alaska, the mighty polar bears lumber through a desolate snowfield. They use an inches-thick layer of blubber and a coat of translucent, hollow hairs to trap air close to their body and insulate them from the horrendous weather. These animals are like great pieces of machinery, apex predators, enormous living tanks wandering the Arctic.

In southern Alaska, the mighty humans romp and play through the snow of Hatcher Pass, jaws agape at the view. They subsist on a diet of freeze-dried pasta, hot tea and snow-chilled beer, and they use a highly evolved system of insulation built for extreme adventure and unforgiving hikes to keep themselves toasty.

The Lava Flow Ultralight is ACG's answer to super-portable, super-effective warmth. Don't get us wrong: we love an overbuilt, feature-rich jacket, but we don't always want to lug it around deep into the backcountry.
The Lava Flow Ultralight uses 1000-fill ExpeDRY down for a truly mind-boggling warmth-to-weight ratio. Much like the polar bear's mighty fur, it uses quick-drying, gold-flecked goose down to trap warm air close to your body—just without the need for a heavy layer of blubber. In fact, it's been specifically designed with super-light hardware and zips so that it weighs a little while insulating a LOT.
The result is a packable jacket that can be deployed in an instant for intense warmth that won't slow you down. Wear it as a thermal insulating layer below a shell, wear it by itself or throw it in your pack just in case—you probably won't notice the weight difference, and it'll be one hell of an insurance policy for chilly nighttime winds or unexpected snowstorms.
ACG Lava Flow Ultralight. Molten warmth for biting cold.
