  • Running outside can boost your mood and build your strength. It’s a chance to connect with your surroundings and reconnect with yourself.
  • The key to a great run outside is the right preparation for all conditions, whether it’s mentally, physically or with the necessary gear.

When you’re feeling stressed and in need of a good outlet, a run outside can be a great way to help burn off some steam, boosting your mood—and your training.

The Benefits of Getting Outside

Running outside offers different terrains, elevations and, of course, fresh air. Compared with running on a treadmill, a change in terrain means training different muscle groups which can help your overall running fitness.

Aside from the physical benefits, a run can help you cleanse your mind, work through challenges and process current priorities in your day-to-day life. And when you add in an interesting setting, it can become something of a meditative experience.

“Running outside is an opportunity to lose yourself and find yourself at the same time… Connecting to your surrounding setting, be it the city or nature, you can be distracted by the external environment and connect more to your internal dialogue.”

The Right Prep For Your Run

Being prepared for the conditions of your run is a great way to enjoy your surroundings and the run itself.

For a trail run, it’s important to have the right gear, especially the appropriate footwear, like the Nike Pegasus Trail. You also want to have enough food and water on hand and to know the surrounding area and weather conditions. When possible, it’s great to grab a running buddy.

Before heading out on a run, it’s important to get plenty of water before you begin the workout, and make sure to hydrate throughout. Consider items like sunscreen and hats, as well.

You don't have to do it solo, for some running is a team sport. Finding a running buddy can improve accountability, help build the habit and provide a source of support on your running journey. There are plenty of running groups for all different levels, so check out your local community groups who love to hit the road, track or trail together.
