Welche Auswirkungen Schlafmangel auf die Fitness hat, erlebte Jeffrey Durmer, Doktor der Medizin und der Philosophie, während seiner Zeit als Spitzenathlet und später als Vater zweier Töchter, die als Schwimmerinnen in den USA erfolgreich waren. Er beschloss daraufhin, das Thema genauer zu erforschen. Mittlerweile unterstützt Dr. Durmer als Neurologe, Systemneurowissenschaftler und Schlafmediziner die Spitzenathlet:innen von heute. Durch seine Arbeit mit der NFL und dem US-Team im Gewichtheben in Tokio 2021 hat er gezeigt, wie einfache Maßnahmen wie Sleep Banking (das Schlafen auf Vorrat) die Leistung erheblich beeinflussen können. Vor allem aber hat er gezeigt, dass Schlaf *Erholung* bedeutet und dass ausreichender Schlaf zu jeder erfolgreichen Trainingsroutine gehört.
