Air Trainer Huarache

When the future arrived in 1991, it was met with scepticism—until people wore it. Tinker Hatfield drew inspiration from waterskiing when designing this audacious running shoe. He also loved the minimal design of traditional Mexican Huarache sandals, and aimed to create a stripped-down, straight-forward shoe that would leverage Nike's latest innovations to out-perform the competition. Using the form-fitting neoprene booties from waterskis as the foundational concept for foot-hugging comfort, the final Huarache design included an exoskeleton and wrap-around heel cage for added support and stability. No Swoosh? No problem. Let the technology speak for itself. The bold, ground-breaking Huarache had an identity all its own—brash, disruptive and unapologetically Nike. Everyone had to get a pair.
Roughly a year after the Air Huarache disrupted the running scene, the Air Trainer Huarache was born. Equipped with a higher collar for ankle stability and a midfoot strap for containment, the rugged cross-trainer had a sturdy foam midsole and Nike Air cushioning in the heel and forefoot for added comfort. In the early '90s, cross-training was catching fire, and the Air Trainer Huarache quickly became the shoe of choice for athletes around the world.
