Kane
Berlin has a reputation as a metropolis filled to the brim with contemporary culture and creative scenes. From art to music, from nightlife to fashion, the city has it all. Considered by many as one of the world's premier sneaker boutiques, Solebox has been a local pillar in the city's sneaker and streetwear scene since 2002. With a deep respect for heritage while keeping eyes and ears to the streets, Solebox got together with Kane, one of the city's most talented young photographers, to create a special magazine and exhibition that will highlight and celebrate Berlin’s authentic love and passion for the Air Max 90. We connected with Kane for an inside look and found out about his personal story as a young creative in Berlin.
Driven by curiosity and inspired by creativity, 25-year old Hamburg-born Kane Holz initially started out in advertising, but slowly transitioned to his true passion: photography. In a playful way Kane honed his craft early on while documenting his friends skateboarding and snowboarding, crediting skateboarding as a very important source of personal inspiration: "It's a sport that's not necessarily about specific results, but more so about personality and how something's done. In other sports being stylish is a bonus, but in skateboarding it's one of the most important aspects. This kind of expressiveness is very appealing to me." It has taught Kane to express himself both creatively, as well as in a fashion sense through the interconnection between skateboarding and streetwear culture.
It's this sensibility, mindset and love for both the culture as well as the visual art form that motivated him to push forward and combine both worlds. It eventually enabled him to turn to his hobby full-time to make a living, while also inspiring people in the community to get into photography. "I feel very lucky and blessed to be able to do photography in a culture that I love. I know what's up without having to look things up, because I'm also part of it. That makes it easier for me to understand certain aspects such as nuances and relevancy.
The resurgence of 90's styles did not escape Kane's observant photographer's eye: "The 90's influence has been around for a minute. Think of tracksuits, baggy jeans. The Air Max 90 works with that really well. Fashion is getting a little wider again, letting go of the tapered fits and rocking more of that true 90's style." Since its release almost 3 decades ago, the Air Max 90 has always maintained a unique position in sneaker history, especially in European cities such as Berlin, where the model has always been embraced in the streets, as well as in various music scenes. With his finger on the pulse of sneaker culture, Kane hopes he can contribute to giving the classic Air Max 90 silhouette a newfound love by creating this special Air Max 90 content and showcasing the shoes in a fresh, contemporary way.
