New York moves how it wants. It's fast, unrelenting, but also beautiful. The rhythm of the court, of color, of the street, the way I paint, the way I play...

...it's how I move and it's what I make. My name is Andrea Bergart and I'm an artist and designer in New York City. 

I love how intuitive basketball is. I love how fun it's always been for me. More recently, it's been embedded into my studio practice and my design practice, which seems pretty natural since I've always been interested in it. 

There's a great improvisation that happens in basketball where you're responding to your teammates and yourself in space on the court, and I try to bring that into my artwork as well.

Some of my paintings require more structure and very much being in the flow and sort of leaning into the qualities of the paint. I think there's a lot of personal movement and signature styles in basketball that I love.

How you play basketball and how you dress. I think that's directly relates to how you want to express yourself.

I'm drawn to the figures in basketball. I think that to me, I'm interested in unique gestures that happen on the court and then extending those or exaggerating those.

It's pretty exciting to design and then to paint a 50 foot painting. Exciting to have people play on a painting where you're not normally supposed to be touching artwork.

It's taking more of a presence in my life for sure. I still play, it's in my designs, it's in my paintings, so it's taking the main stage now.
