For some, running is purely physical. Lace up, log some miles, call it a day. Aerie Em is not one of those people. In fact, she doesn’t think she would be who she is without it. “Running is sort of my way of bringing all the parts of myself together in one place,” she says. It’s been that way for as long as she can remember. “It has become more than just a part of my life — it sort of informs and influences every other facet. It’s the filter through which I see everything.”

You could say that running keeps her curious. While at the same time, it also keeps her whole.

“I think certain events in your life can make you feel really disconnected from your body.” Running, especially with her crew, the Black Roses, provides Aerie with the kind of balance and community she is looking for. “As a group, we have really important conversations of just what’s happening in the world, of what’s happening to us on individual levels.” That relationship, along with the one she’s fostered with the sport, help her stay focused in life, as well as on the track. Come race day, though, Aerie’s perspective becomes even more clear.

“I just want to be open to everything and experience the full joy of being there,” she says. “Only running finds me that kind of freedom.”
