BMX ATHLETE Nigel Sylvester

What is your favorite shoe in your collection?
My favorite shoe is the Nike SB dunk hi 'S.O.M.P.' it's a shoe I more than just love, I have an emotional connection. I designed the shoe alongside DJ Clark Kent in 2012 and it released in 2014.

How would you describe it?
I grew up buying my favorite athlete's sneakers like Jordan's and Deion Sanders mid tops with the bulky strap. On my journey to becoming a Pro BMX'er I worked as hard as I could with the dream of one day signing a sneaker deal. I was fortunate enough to sign with Nike and afforded the opportunity to finally have my own signature sneaker, it was exactly what I dreamt of and more. A total career game changer.

What does this shoe mean to you?
It meant everything! Having a shoe idea, bringing it to life and having it sell out in one day..it was more than shoe. It was a testament to dedication, passion and love for BMX riding.

How did you go about choosing this silhouette?
The Dunk Hi has always been one of my favorite shoes because its simplistic, beautiful and versatile. It's a shoe that I can live life in!

Can you describe your design process for creating the shoe?
Approaching the design process of the S.O.M.P I wanted to create a Dunk Hi that embodied function and premium quality. The same way I approach all my projects, first it has to work and second what materials can we use to make it the best.

What do the colors and materials mean to you?
I started working on this shoe from the bottom up. A sticky gum sole was important because the sole of my shoes are one of the very few things that connects me to my bike. Followed by a white midsole and a all black upper which we chose a very premium euphoria suede. I've always loved safari print and I used it on the eyestay to represent the concrete jungle that is NYC. We finalized the shoe with a chrome swoosh and that was a ode to the classic chrome BMX bikes I use to ride around on as a kid in Queens.
