NIKE ZOOM VAPORFLY ELITE

SU17_Breaking2_LP_TheInnovation_03.jpg

BEHIND THE INNOVATION At the foremost edges of human performance, it’s innovation in details that fuels the expansion

of human possibility. The Nike Waffle Racer’s outsole. Bill Bowerman experimenting with rubberized

tracks instead of dirt tracks. The Nike Swift Suit aerodynamically designed to reduce drag. The

Nike Zoom Victory Elite bringing a carbon-fiber plate to track spikes. And now, marathon shoes.

While each runner, Lelisa Desisa, Zersenay Tadese, and Eliud Kipchoge, challenged the unthinkable,

they wore shoes sporting an unprecedented level of science and athlete integration.

IN 2016 during what was called Camp One, we brought these three Breaking2 runners to Nike

for extensive testing, gathering data to guide the development of their respective shoes.

While each ran in different shoes with varying attributes, we measured their oxygen consumption

levels, which ultimately helped us identify the exact specifications necessary for each runner to

perform at peak efficiency. Driven by these insights, along with continual feedback from the runners

over the course of their training, the development team produced a shoe unlike anything we’ve ever

built before. The shoe features an ultra-light, ultra-responsive Nike Zoom Vaporfly 4% midsole.

Nike ZoomX provides greater energy return than any foam Nike has ever put underneath any

athlete in any sport. Working in tandem with the foam is a unidirectional carbon plate with a

specific geometry that enhances the propulsive sensation in each stride.

The upper is a performance Flyknit material that is not only optimized to an athlete’s

unique foot shape and stride, but also shaped aerodynamically with the help of wind

tunnel testing to minimize drag. A unified contrast of visual speed and steadiness, the

unique color palette of Velocity Red, Chrome Blue, and Stealth Grey of the Breaking2

project was inspired by the location of the historic challenge. The colorway appeared

on the Breaking2 runners and across Nike Running products for elite and everyday

runners alike. Every detail continued to be scrutinized, observed, and adjusted, but the

innovation on the feet of the Breaking2 runners was undoubtedly at the forefront of

product innovation—not just at Nike, but in the sport itself.

NIKE ZOOM VAPORFLY 4% Built around the same innovations as the Breaking2 runners’ shoes is the

new Nike Zoom Vaporfly 4%—the fastest marathon shoe Nike has ever sold.

In lab tests, the shoe measured 4% better for running economy than Nike’s

latest and fastest marathon racer – Zoom Streak 6. What does that mean?

Breaking2_CDP_Innovation_P5.jpg

CONSIDER THIS: A 4% improvement in running economy means you can run at the same pace,

with 4% less effort. Improving running economy is a key determining factor in

improving race performance. At any level, 4% improvement is a gigantic

difference. Not just the difference between winning and losing, but possibly

between a 3:01 marathon and something that starts with a 2. Just the thought

of losing these shoes kept Olympian, Shalane Flanagan up at night, “I woke up

in a panic the night before my race that someone stole these shoes!”

The Nike Zoom Vaporfly 4% wasn’t built to move one runner forward. It was

built to move running forward. Including your own running.

PUSH FAST FORWARD It's not a button, it's a mission—to advance the limits of human potential. Shared

by runners of all abilities, and infused into each of the shoes you see here. From the

Nike Zoom Vaporfly 4%, a state-of-the-art statement of pure speed, to the Nike Zoom Fly,

a lightweight high-velocity racer or trainer, to the new Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 34,

the ride of choice for everyone ready to run fast.
