BREAKING2: THE DOCUMENTARY Nike and National Geographic present
the documentary on the attempt to
break the 2-hour marathon barrier.
Watch the film.

BREAKING2 On May 6, 2017, three runners attempted to break the two-hour marathon barrier. Eliud Kipchoge

ran the fastest marathon in history at 2 hours and 25 seconds. Since 2014, our team has supported

the mission of breaking the two-hour marathon barrier. We will never stop pursuing what

some believe to be unimaginable—we continue to push forward.

THE ATTEMPT They said it’s a barrier that can’t be broken, so why even try?

But that’s the thing about barriers; when you push them,

when you run them down, you redefine what’s possible.

THE INNOVATION The Zoom Series includes: the Nike Vaporfly Elite, a

finely-tuned racer built to the Breaking2 runners’ exact

specifications; Nike Zoom Vaporfly 4%, a state-of-the-art

statement of pure speed; the Nike Zoom Fly, a lightweight

high-velocity racer or trainer; and the new Nike Air Zoom

Pegasus 34, an ultra-responsive everyday and race-day shoe.

THE RUNNERS Meet the runners who took on the challenge,

see what they’ve accomplished and

how they performed.

THE PREPARATION Weather. Nutrition. Recovery. Genetics. Speed is

influenced by almost infinite variables. Here’s how our

team approached finding the ideal state of them all.

BREAKING 2:02:57 In May 2017, Eliud Kipchoge brought the world closer to breaking
the 2-hour marathon barrier. After falling short of 2:02:57 in Berlin,
his goal remains the same: set the new marathon world record.

BREAKING 26.2 Inspired by Breaking2, the quest to break the 2-hour marathon, Kevin Hart set out to
break his own barrier: to run his first-ever marathon. On November 5th in New York City,
he will push farther than he has ever run before to cross the finish line at 26.2 miles.
