Wang Shuang: The Best Always Get Better

The Best Always Get Better

The Story of Wang Shuang

Resolve. Moving forward. Constantly improving her game. These are the cornerstones of Wang Shuang’s status as one of the stars of the Steel Roses—and one of the best players in the world. “From when I was 18 until I was 23, I have matured, both mentally and physically,” she says. “On the grand stage, with the National team, my self-confidence and especially my heart has improved by leaps and bounds.”

In her constant drive to add dimension to her game, Wang took a big leap in 2018, leaving her comfort zone to accept a spot with one of world’s top clubs, Paris Saint-Germain.

“As a team and as individuals, we need to push ourselves beyond our comfort zones. That’s how you win on the biggest stage.”

“In Europe, the challenges are even greater, now I can see both Asia and Europe. How big the gap is between players? I want to measure myself against the world’s best!”

Prior to Wang, few Chinese women’s soccer players made the journey to Europe; she hopes her story and her experience will inspire the next generation.

China has had a long and storied history, from winning seven Asian Cups to playing host to the world stage in 1991 and 2007—and making it to the Finals in Pasadena in 1999. The nation is counting on this year’s team to live up to the high standards set by ’99’s team, which came just one penalty kick away from winning it all.

Wang herself is optimistic. This year’s embodies the grit and finesse of the ’99 Steel Roses. “We go to France with the goal of winning the entire thing, and to restore the spirit of Chinese football,” she says.
