This 2018/19 alternate kit represents Mexico’s Day of the Dead, a celebration that remembers deceased loved ones in a joyful festival. Sparked by that tradition, the shirt connects past and present with vibrant Mexican culture.
The jersey features the traditional blue and gold that have distinguished the team for years. For the first time, two crossed bones have been added under the Pumas emblem, a bold tribute to the skulls that adorn altars and honor Mexico’s ancestors during Day of the Dead.
The UNAM Pumas was founded in 1954 by an amateur group of student players from the Universidad Nacional. The 'Pumas' nickname, which is now an essential part of the team's image, came from coach Roberto 'Tapatío' Méndez. Méndez used the Puma as a symbol to describe their aggressive and intelligent style of play. Seven Primera División championships and four international titles later, the Pumas have proven that courage.
