Senast uppdaterad: 30 november 2020  Inom sport och träning talas det mycket om hur mental inställning kan påverka prestationerna. Men tänk om det fungerar även i motsatt riktning? Tänk om fysisk aktivitet ändrar hur hjärnan fungerar och hjälper dig fokusera och tänka klart även i ditt dagliga liv? Ny forskning vid Brainvolts Auditory Neuroscience Laboratory vid Northwestern University tyder på att det är så. "Ljud har en oerhörd inverkan på vårt liv, något som inte uppmärksammas tillräckligt", säger Nina Kraus, fil. dr., grundare och chef för Brainvolts Auditory Neuroscience Laboratory vid Northwestern University. Kraus har ägnat hela sin karriär åt att undersöka hur hjärnan bearbetar ljud. Hon har arbetat med människor som lidit brist på språklig stimulans som barn och därför verkar ha koncentrationssvårigheter. Hon har arbetat med musiker och tvåspråkiga med förhöjd förmåga att bearbeta ljud. Nu, i hennes labbs senaste studie, har hon riktat in sig på en ny grupp försökspersoner. "Vi ville ta reda på om elitatleter bearbetar ljud annorlunda", säger hon. För att ta reda på det här arbetade Kraus labb med nästan 1 000 försökspersoner. Hälften var atleter i Division 1 och hälften var universitetsstuderande. Forskarna mätte den elektriska responsen i deras hjärnor då de hörde stavelsen "da". Och den stora upptäckten? Atleterna uppvisade konsekvent lägre nivåer av "neuralt bakgrundsbrus" än icke-atleterna. ## "Med mindre bakgrundsbrus kan du förstå ljuden omkring dig bättre." __Nina Kraus__, fil. dr., grundare och chef för Brainvolts Auditory Neuroscience Laboratory vid Northwestern University "Neuralt bakgrundsbrus" är inte alls samma sak som verkligt brus. För en atlet är det inte publikens rop, ett billarm i närheten eller en motståndares förolämpningar. "Du kan tänka på det som radiobrus i hjärnan", säger Kraus. "Det är en ständig neural aktivitet som sker omedvetet. Om det finns för mycket hindrar det dig från att bearbeta inkommande information." Det här kan t.ex. göra det svårt att följa vad någon säger. Kraus team har faktiskt sett en stark koppling mellan mer neuralt brus och studiesvårigheter. "Det handlar om förhållandet mellan signal och brus", säger hon. "Med mindre bakgrundsbrus kan man lättare att förstå ljuden omkring sig." Kraus säger att det faktum att de här unga atleterna upplever mindre av det mentala bruset är något mycket bra. Det kan ge ökad koncentration och uppfattningsförmåga som hjälper dem i vilket yrke som helst. Kraus och hennes team vet fortfarande inte varför atleter upplever mindre neuralt brus, men de har två intressanta teorier. Den första: Atleternas hjärnor kan tänkas anpassa sig till specifik träning och spelets krav. "En atlet måste lyssna på signaler", säger Kraus. "De måste lyssna på sin coach, på andra spelare, på ljudet från den egna utrustningen. Atleter måste vara oerhört medveten om allt som sker runtomkring. De behöver veta vad de ska lyssna på och vad de ska ignorera." Kraus spekulerar att en atlets hjärna på något sätt kan "stänga av" det neurala bruset så att de kan höra det de behöver på planen. En typ av evolutionär anpassning under en livstid. Och den andra teorin? "Det finns väldigt många studier som visar att fysisk aktivitet är bra för både kroppen och hjärnan", säger Kraus. "Det är något vi vet rent allmänt. Det är möjligt att en av orsakerna till att vi såg mindre neuralt brus bland atleterna helt enkelt var för att de var i sådan god form." Det är den här andra idén som kan ha långtgående betydelse för atleter på amatörnivå. Det skulle betyda att varje morgonlöprunda, varje träningspass i vardagsrummet, varje basketträning kan öka förmågan att uppfatta världen tydligare. Båda teorierna är relevanta för alla atleter, både på amatör- och tävlingsnivå, säger Kraus. "När vi försöker ta reda på hur fysisk aktivitet påverkar sinnet får vi ofta ledtrådar genom att studera extrema fall", säger hon. "De här biologiska principerna bygger ofta på kontinuitet. Det borde uppmuntra alla att ägna sig åt dagliga fysiska aktiviteter." Även om varje liten bit är bra så är det troligt att ju mer du gör desto mer klarhet får du. Kraus påpekar också att man inte behöver ett lag för att sätta igång. "Atleterna vi testade gör en enorm mängd träning på egen hand", säger hon. "Vi upptäcker fler och fler bevis för att alla sorters fysisk aktivitet har en enormt positiv inverkan på kropp och sinne."
