# Renee Montgomery: Varje insats räknas

Av alla tricks som finns i basket är rotationen den mest kraftfulla. Det handlar om att hitta rätt tillfälle, en endaste sekund, när spelet öppnar sig och du kan byta riktning, passa eller sikta mot korgen. Det är så matcher förändras och mästare skapas. Det var så Renee Montgomery skrev historia som den första före detta spelaren som blev ägare av och vice ordförande för ett WNBA-lag.
Renees avgörande stund var under Black Lives Matter-rörelsen 2020. Efter två WNBA-mästerskap och en elva år lång karriär som proffsspelare såg hon vad som hände svarta människor i USA och ifrågasatte sitt eget syfte, både som atlet, men också som människa. "Det var väldigt oroligt just då och jag ifrågasatte min egen roll." Hon bestämde sig för att hänga jerseyn på hyllan och spendera resten av säsongen med att tänka över vad hon behövde göra.
## "Jag vill att spelare ska känna sig hörda, ge dem en röst."
Hon satte igång. Hon började prata om social rättvisa för sin egen och andras räkning. "Det är viktigt för mig att använda min röst, eftersom alla är inte bekväma med att använda sin" säger hon. Hon skrev ett öppet brev till ägarna av hennes lag, Atlanta Dream, om de etniska orättvisor hon såg. Hon deltog i demonstrationer och utbildade människor om vikten av att rösta. Men hon var ändå inte nöjd med sin insats. "Alla pratade om att det skulle ta evigheter att ändra på systemet. Men jag tyckte att det skulle hända nu och det var då jag började fundera på att bli ägare."

Hon blev aktivist och en ledare i sin community och nu kunde hon använda sitt baskettänk. Hon började se sig själv som ägare och någon som kan skapa förändring från toppen med det hon kunde om teamwork, kommunikation och delade värden. "Jag vill att spelare ska känna sig hörda, ge dem en röst" säger hon. Efter noga utarbetade strategier och nätverkande i basketligan blev det verklighet.

Renee tog opinionsbildningen till nya höjder som styrelseledamot för Atlanta Dream och hennes mål var att skapa en ny era inom basket för kvinnor: en era då en svart, kvinnlig HBTQ+-atlet kunde leda ett lag och en rörelse på samma gång. Hon grundade Renee's Runs, en egen basketliga bara för kvinnor i Atlanta, Georgia, för att bygga upp basketen för kvinnor och föra stafettpinnen vidare till nästa generation atleter. Renee's Run är en plats där kvinnor kan stärka varandra, umgås och växa, allt från hobbyspelare till tidigare proffs. "Vi arbetar tillsammans och vi bygger något tillsammans. Det är guld värt", säger Renee.
I en värld där atleter definieras av prestationerna på planen visar Renee att ibland är det saker vi gör utanför planen som ändrar sporten för alltid. "Jag vigde mitt liv åt basketen eftersom jag älskar den. Det öppnade dörrar för mig. Men rörelsen och förändringen fortsätter också tack vare varenda litet ögonblick som alla bidrar med. Det behöver inte vara en demonstration, det kan vara vad som helst. Du kan skapa förändring."
