Get release date and specs. Last updated: 29 October 2026 10 min read The Nike Alphafly 4 is the biggest update yet to Nike's most advanced racing shoe, built to help runners hold their fastest pace, whether that be for your first 5K or a full marathon. A redesigned Air Zoom unit and all-new ZoomX LT foam work together to make this Alphafly lighter and more responsive than any Alphafly ever, while a wider Flyplate and connected platform make it one of the most stable racing shoes Nike has created. The Nike Alphafly 4 became available for an early, limited release on 17 September 2026 at Nike.com, followed by broader availability on 29 October 2026 at Nike.com and at select retail locations. "A marathon is dynamic. With Alphafly 4, we spent years listening to athletes, studying how fatigue impacts performance and running mechanics, refining every element of the system to help runners maintain efficiency when it matters most", said Emily Farina, Senior Principal, Running Footwear, Nike Sport Research Lab. "Our goal was simple: create a shoe that helps athletes feel more confident and capable deep into the race. That's what Alphafly 4 was built to do". ## Quick Takeaways - The Nike Alphafly 4 is the biggest update yet to the Alphafly franchise, built for runners chasing their fastest 5K-to-marathon performances. - A redesigned Air Zoom unit and new ZoomX LT foam combine for a lighter and more energy-returning ride than previous iterations. - A wider Flyplate and connected platform make the Alphafly 4 one of the most stable racing shoes Nike has developed, helping runners stay confident deep into the race. - The Nike Alphafly 4 became available for a limited release on 17 September 2026 at Nike.com, to be followed by broader availability on 29 October 2026 at Nike.com and select retail locations. ## What Is the Nike Alphafly 4? The Nike Alphafly 4 is the latest evolution of Nike's most advanced racing platform, designed to help runners pursue their fastest performances from a 5K up to a full marathon. Designed for athletes chasing personal records, championship podiums and breakthrough moments, the Alphafly 4 represents the next evolution of a franchise that has helped redefine what's possible in distance running. From first-time finishes to world-record performances, the Alphafly has become one of the most recognisable and influential shoes in modern racing. Its legacy can be traced to one of the sport's most iconic moments: the Alphafly prototype worn by Eliud Kipchoge during his historic sub-two-hour marathon effort. Since then, the shoe has continued to push the boundaries of performance, helping athletes around the world discover new levels of speed, efficiency and confidence. For the Alphafly 4, Nike looked beyond pure speed. Instead, designers, engineers and researchers focused on a question every marathon runner understands: what happens when the race gets harder? The answer shaped every element of the shoe. The result is a complete performance system that combines a redesigned Air Zoom unit, all-new ZoomX LT foam, a new AtomKnit upper, Fast Shot outsole and a wider Flyplate platform to help runners stay efficient, comfortable and confident throughout the entire race. ## Built for the Hardest Miles Every race begins with possibility. The energy of the starting line. The anticipation of a goal. The confidence earned through months of training. But marathon racing isn't defined by the first mile. It's defined by the final miles. As fatigue builds, stride mechanics begin to change. Pace becomes harder to maintain. Small inefficiencies become more noticeable. Runners are no longer simply searching for speed; they're working to hold onto it with everything they have. This reality became a guiding principle for the Alphafly 4. Nike spent years studying how fatigue affects running mechanics and performance over long distances. Insights from elite athletes and extensive testing and research informed every update, helping create a shoe specifically designed to support runners when maintaining efficiency becomes most challenging. The objective wasn't simply to make a fast shoe *faster*. It was to create a racing shoe that helps more athletes sustain speed *longer*. One that feels confident at mile one and remains dependable at mile 20. One that supports world-class competitors and everyday runners alike. One that helps athletes focus less on what's happening beneath their feet and more on the goals ahead of them. [](https://www.nike.com/ro/w/nike-alphafly-racing-shoes-1tp17z9gdhkzy7ok) ## What's new in the Alphafly 4 Nike redesigned nearly every major component of the shoe to create the lightest and most responsive Alphafly yet. The result delivers more energy return, improved comfort and greater efficiency while maintaining the signature propulsion runners have come to expect from the franchise. ## New Air Zoom Unit At the heart of the Alphafly 4 is a redesigned Air Zoom system engineered to deliver even greater responsiveness. The updated unit is lighter than the previous version while providing enhanced energy return. Designed to absorb impact and efficiently transfer energy into the next stride, it helps create a more propulsive feeling underfoot without compromising comfort. The result is a ride that feels smoother, quieter and more efficient, helping runners preserve momentum over long distances. ## Introducing ZoomX LT Foam The Alphafly 4 also introduces an entirely new foam platform. ZoomX LT joins the Alphafly family as a lighter, softer and more energetic complement to Nike's existing ZoomX foam. Placed above the Flyplate and paired with ZoomX beneath it, the new material creates a complete cushioning system designed specifically for long-distance racing. ZoomX LT is up to 17% lighter than standard ZoomX and delivers 8% more energy return while maintaining the soft sensation runners look for when covering marathon distances. Together, the foam system creates a ride that feels lively and protective without adding unnecessary weight. ## Wider Flyplate for Greater Stability One of the most significant updates arrives in the form of a redesigned carbon-fibre Flyplate. The wider platform works alongside the dual Air Zoom units and ZoomX foam system to improve stability while preserving the signature forward-driving sensation of the Alphafly. For marathon runners, stability matters. When fatigue changes running mechanics, the ability to maintain efficient movement becomes increasingly important. The broader Flyplate and connected platform help create smoother transitions and increased confidence across a wider range of running styles. The result is one of the most stable racing shoes available in Nike Running. ## Refined AtomKnit Upper The upper has also gone through a transformation. The new AtomKnit construction combines breathability, comfort and security within a seamless package designed to minimise distractions. Integrated heel support, zoned performance areas and engineered midfoot cables create a locked-in feel while reducing unnecessary weight. The upper virtually disappears around the foot, allowing runners to focus on cadence, pace and performance. ## Debuting the Fast Shot Outsole The Alphafly 4 introduces Nike's lightweight Fast Shot outsole, engineered to provide reliable traction and grip throughout every stage of a race. Designed to help runners stay connected to the road, the outsole works seamlessly with the shoe's cushioning, Air Zoom units and Flyplate system to promote confident transitions and efficient movement, whether accelerating off the start line or maintaining pace far into a marathon. ## Who the Nike Alphafly 4 Is For The Alphafly 4 is designed for runners who have goals. That could mean competing in an Olympic final, qualifying for Boston or finishing a first marathon. Regardless of experience level, the shoe is built for athletes seeking Nike's most advanced combination of cushioning, propulsion and efficiency. What makes the Alphafly 4 unique is its balance. Many racing shoes prioritise speed. Others focus on comfort. The Alphafly 4 was developed to deliver both. "I've run in just about every race day shoe out there, and Alphafly 4 is my number 1 pick", said Meaghan Murray, a member of the Alphafly 4 prototype testing cohort. "It has the most propulsive yet comfortable and cushioned ride I've experienced in a race shoe. It is softer and bouncier than before, and the upper is comfortable and accommodating". The new cushioning platform provides a softer experience while maintaining energy return with every step. The updated Flyplate system increases stability without sacrificing responsiveness. The refined upper improves fit and comfort while remaining exceptionally lightweight. Together, these innovations create a racing shoe that helps runners hold on to what they've trained for, carrying speed, confidence and momentum from the first stride through the final push across the finish line. ## The Evolution of Marathon Racing Modern marathon racing looks different than it did a decade ago. Athletes are running faster. Training methods continue to evolve. The understanding of recovery, performance and efficiency has reached new levels. Footwear innovation has played a meaningful role in that progression. The Alphafly franchise has been part of many defining moments in the sport, helping athletes establish world records, win major championships and redefine expectations around distance running performance. The Alphafly 4 builds on that legacy while looking toward what's next. Because every runner, regardless of pace or experience, is ultimately chasing the same thing: the best version of themselves. "Nike Alphafly 4 gave me confidence from the start line to the finish", said Nike athlete Addisu Gobena of his August 2026 winning marathon in Sydney. "When the race became difficult, I trusted the work I had done and trusted the shoe beneath me. As athletes, we are always chasing what comes next, and I believe Alphafly 4 shows how much opportunity exists to push marathon performance forward". ## When Will the Nike Alphafly 4 Be Released? It's where belief is tested. It's where training, preparation and determination come together. And often, it's where confidence matters most. The Nike Alphafly 4 was built with that moment in mind. Every design decision, every material update and every technological innovation was created to help runners stay connected to their pace, their form and their goals when the race becomes most demanding.
