Compare puffers, parkas, shells, fleece and gilets by condition. Last updated: 6 November 2026 6 min read The best women's winter coat depends on what the colder months look like where you live (or where you visit). Chances are, a single jacket or coat won't fulfil every need, but knowing the best style for different types of weather can help you curate the styles best suited to you. Dry, freezing days call for insulation, like a down or synthetic-fill puffer or a long parka. Wet, windy days call for a waterproof or water-repellent shell. Milder days call for a fleece or gilet you can layer. Below are the best Nike winter coats and jackets for women, organised by style. To make it even easier, we've added details explaining what each one is best for and how to choose the right fit for layering underneath. ## Quick takeaways: - For everyday warmth in dry cold, choose a puffer jacket. For the most coverage on cold-weather days, choose a parka that reaches the knee or mid-calf. - For rain, sleet and wet snow, choose a Storm-FIT or GORE-TEX shell, or a puffer with a water-repellent finish. - Down insulation provides superior warmth while being lightweight. Synthetic insulation retains more of its warmth when wet and dries faster. - Size your winter coat to fit over a jumper or fleece without pulling across the shoulders or hips. ## What Is the Best Winter Coat for Women? If you can only choose one, the best winter coat for most women is an insulated, hooded puffer with a water-repellent finish. It traps heat, sheds light snow and rain, and works for everything from the commute to weekend errands. For colder climates, a longer parka adds leg coverage. For wet climates, a waterproof shell layered over a fleece gives you more protection from rain. Nike Therma-FIT technology, found in many Nike puffers and parkas, is designed to help manage body heat to keep you warm, whether you're looking for a lightweight women's winter jacket or a heavier coat. ## 1. Puffer jackets Best for: everyday warmth in cold, dry weather A puffer jacket traps body heat in quilted chambers of down or synthetic insulation, which makes it the most versatile winter coat you can own. The Nike Sportswear Windpuffer Therma-FIT Hooded Puffer pairs insulation with a hood for wind and light snow. For more ways to wear one, see our guide to the [best women's puffer coats](https://www.nike.com/a/best-puffer-coat-women). ## 2. Parkas Best for: cold-weather temperatures and long waits outside A parka is a longer insulated coat that reaches the hip, knee or mid-calf, keeping your [legs warm along with your core](https://www.nike.com/a/warmest-winter-jackets-coats). The Nike Sportswear Classic Puffer Therma-FIT Loose Hooded Parka has a relaxed fit with room to layer a hoodie underneath. ## 3. Technical Insulated Jackets Best for: winter hiking, snowy trails and outdoor adventures [ACG](https://www.nike.com/a/abcs-nike-acg) jackets are [built for the outdoors](https://www.nike.com/a/nike-acg-lava-loft-release-info). The ACG Lava Flow Therma-FIT ADV Jacket uses engineered insulation to hold in heat while staying light enough to pack, and the [hooded version](https://www.nike.com/a/best-hooded-jacket-women) adds coverage on exposed trails. For a lighter, more premium down insulation, the ACG Lava Flow Ultralight Therma-FIT ADV Jacket packs down small for [hiking or camping in the cold.](https://www.nike.com/a/winter-hiking-gear) ## 4. Waterproof and Rain Shells Best for: rain, sleet and wet snow [When winter is wet](https://www.nike.com/a/best-rain-jacket), waterproofing matters more than insulation. A shell like the ACG Phantazma Storm-FIT ADV Jacket blocks wind and water and layers over a fleece or insulated mid-layer. Look for sealed seams, an adjustable hood and cuffs that close around your wrists. ## 5. Fleece Jackets Best for: mild winter days and layering under a shell A [fleece jacket](https://www.nike.com/a/best-fleece-jacket) is light, soft and warm without bulk. The Nike Sportswear Tech Fleece Windrunner Full-Zip Hoodie works on its own on cool days and as a mid-layer under a shell on colder ones. If you prefer a winter jacket for women with a cosier texture, try the Nike Sportswear High-Pile Fleece Jacket. ## 6. Gilets Best for: core warmth on milder days and layering under a coat A gilet keeps your core warm while leaving your arms free. Wear the ACG Lava Flow Therma-FIT ADV Gilet over a long-sleeved top on a mild day, or under a shell when temperatures drop. ## 7. Running and Training Jackets Best for: outdoor workouts in the cold For winter runs, the ACG Lava Loft Therma-FIT Trail-Running Jacket and the Nike Swift Therma-FIT Running Gilet are designed to hold in warmth without overheating once you're moving. These slimmer women's winter jackets and gilets can also be great under your usual winter coat for [layering on cold days.](https://www.nike.com/a/how-to-layer-clothes) ## Down vs Synthetic Insulation: Which Is Warmer? Down insulation offers more warmth by weight and packs down smaller, which makes it ideal for dry, cold days. Choose down or synthetic puffers for cold, and parkas for freezing. - Weather protection: choose Storm-FIT, GORE-TEX or a water-repellent finish if your winters are wet. - Length: hip-length styles move easily, and knee- and calf-length keep your legs warm. - Hood: an insulated or adjustable hood blocks wind and snow. - Fit: size for a jumper or fleece underneath, with room to raise your arms. ## FAQs What type of winter coat is the warmest?
