"What's up everyone? I am your host, Lucian Dickson and we are going deep in the vaults to talk about the Cortez, Nike's 50th anniversary."

"We'd be remiss to not talk about some of its cultural significance and, a lot of that is deeply, deeply tied to the city of Los Angeles."

"I’m very happy to have guests from the sneaker world. I’m going to start first with Ms. Beth Birkett from UNION Los Angeles. Chris Gibbs also from UNION Los Angeles will be joining us. Chris how are you? I’m doing well."

"Thank you for having us, thank you for having me. Joining us from Los Angeles and that is Spanto, who's the founder of Born x Raised and a Los Angeles native and a cultural historian within his own right."

"Spanto, what was your earliest connection to the Cortez as a Los Angeles native? LA Natives, I think a large part of it being the uniform of the shoe for us as Angelenos, is because of price point and accessibility."

"A lot of us didn't have these luxuries. So we used to shop at the mom and pop store that sold shoes, or the swap meet, or whatever was close to you."

"What was the LA style in that era? Back then, it was just about being really, really, really clean. The Cortez has standed the test of time and will always be that fashion statement that people want to make."

"Can I just say one more thing about women wearing Cortez and style and fashion because…"

"…women, Latinx culture, cholas, definitely wore the shoe. Other Black and brown women wore it with their nylon track suits…"

"…and their hair and their nails was always a big part of how we rocked our sneakers, especially our Cortez. We're going to move onto our final chapter for today, which is the Cortez today."

"Sir, what's going on over there? We were approached not too long ago to come up with a UNION collaboration for the Cortez, in celebration of the 50 year."

"What we decided to do is not necessarily lean so much into the past, but look forward to the future."

"This is the UNION Cortez, and these are going to be coming out quite soon. I believe next month. I believe June 21st. So this is a capsule collection that will be coming out. Two colors in June. Two colors in July."

"We changed the overlays and the inlays of the shoe. We leaned into our heritage of being African-American and African textiles."

"We took the heel flap and made that, and revealed the Nike underneath, put our logo there. Is the pattern the same for every pair? Is it different? It's the same pattern, different colors."

"It varies from shoe to shoe, so each shoe will be slightly different, which I liked about that. So that'll be the official summer colors."

"This is close to, but not the final color. These first two will be coming out June 21st. Thank you guys for what you've done and taking the time to walk us all through this. Going to make a lot of people's summers when they come out next month."
