Since Howard University’s federal charter was signed on March 2, 1867, we have commemorated Charter Day by honoring the trailblazers of history while recognizing the triumphs of present-day heroes. This year we celebrate the intersection of Charter Day and Women’s History Month by honoring three of many Howard women that blossomed into visionaries, changemakers, and legends.

    The Black Community
    Commitment Continues

In celebration of Michael Jordan’s 60th birthday, Michael Jordan and the Jordan Brand announce $2.3M in Community Grant awards to 48 grassroots organizations across the United States to help create more equitable futures for Black people.

Created in 2020, at the heart of the Black Community Commitment (BCC) – a 10-year, $100M joint commitment by Michael Jordan and Jordan Brand – is a focus on the four key pillars of economic justice, education, narrative change and social justice, and a desire to take action where it’s needed most. BCC is comprised of three programs - Institutional Grants, Community Grants and Family Grants.

THE BLACK COMMUNITY COMMITMENT GRANT-MAKING APPROACH IS BASED ON FOUR KEY PILLARS:

    1. Economic Justice: Build generational wealth in Black communities through financial literacy, access to capital and strengthening Black entrepreneurial success.
    2. Education: Help schools adapt curriculum and diversify staff to better equip and support the needs of BIPOC students. Engage educational reform efforts that prevent discrimination.
    3. Narrative Change: Increase awareness of the role race plays in our history to drive a deeper understanding of the consequences of racism in our everyday lives.
    4. Social Justice: Build social and political capital within the Black community by investing in and advocating for policy reform.
