Behind the Design: SB Dunk Low "Songkran"

The biggest challenge about making a shoe is making you understand the story within 3 seconds. Wow, looks really good.

Happy Songkran, everyone! Got it. We need the papaya salad for sure. I got you. Sam, what do you think of Songkran? It's definitely known for its huge water fights.

Water signifies cleansing out the bad luck from the previous year and wishing you good luck into the new year, but also just like family gathering and being together with everyone. What I was thinking about while designing this shoe was

definitely about food. All the colors are referencing sticky rice baskets and you'll see the pink of the lace is that holder of the string, and the overlays and underlays are referencing that woven material.

and then the metallic silver referenced the pot that they use to cook sticky rice. We had a really amazing materials designer Philip G who helped pick out different materials that mimicked the look of the sticky rice baskets

We make sure that you know we were using the skate-ready materials like suede and canvas so that they were authentic to the skater. Where is LK? I think he's about to pull up right now.

Hey, what's up everybody? There's LK. Good to see you. How's the shoe skate? The shoe skated great. It was kind of cool to see how this woven basket material kind of faded over time, kept up, held up, no issues. Great.

Yeah, when I first tried on the shoe, I noticed this cool little graphic in here, of the sticky rice. There're so many details hidden inside the shoe, like the sticky rice basket graphic that our graphic designer Steven did.

and mortar and pestle in the other shoe with the papaya salad, as well as the sock liner. There's a line bag graphic that says 'Extra Fancy'.

On the back tab, there's Nike in Thai, which we referenced from Eric Koston's Air Max 95 and brought it over to our Songkran Dunk.

Going through any development process, we see actually a lot of different samples before we get to the final product. So I've had samples with different types of materials that have different color blocking. I'd have to go back to Heather and make sure that the colors look correct and accurate to what

her actual sticky rice baskets look like. Now that we have the final product here, is there any Easter eggs here? Yeah, there's actually one last detail. There's actually a Lotus Flower in the air bag. That's cool!

The Lotus Flower actually ties the collection together. In Thai, we say 'สวัสดีปีใหม่' (Sawasdee Pi Mai), which translates to Happy New Year.
