Az USWNT történelmi 1999-es győzelméig csupán korlátozott lehetőségek álltak a női focisták rendelkezésére ahhoz, hogy profivá váljanak. 1950-ben alakult meg az első női labdarúgóliga az Egyesült Államokban, mindösszesen négy csapattal. 1972-ben a nemek közötti megkülönböztetést tiltó Title IX törvényjavaslat elfogadását követően a női futball felvirágzott az USA-ban, és egyre népszerűbb sporttá és időtöltéssé nőtte ki magát. Az USWNT, azaz az Egyesült Államok női labdarúgó-válogatottja azonban hivatalosan csak 1985-ben alakult meg. 1999-re a csapat már teljes értékűvé vált, egy ragyogó, fiatal csillaggal az alabamai Selmából – ő volt Mia Hamm, aki a Nike első női focistája lett 1994-ben. A rivaldafényben álló USWNT harcedzett csapata készen állt, hogy a futball legnagyobb színpadán csillogtassa meg tudását. 1999. július 10-én a csapat történelmet írt egy olyan eseményen, mely azóta sokkal többet jelképez egy meccsnél. Maga a meccs igazi adok-kapok volt: a hosszabbítás után az állás még mindig 0-0 volt, ami azt jelentette, hogy a játék a büntetőrúgásokkal folytatódott. Az utolsó sorozat, melyből 5-4-es eredménnyel az USWNT került ki győztesen Brandi Chastain történelmi utolsó büntetőjét követően, az Egyesült Államok sporttörténelmének egyik legdiadalmasabb pontjává vált.  Bár amerikai csapat volt, az USWNT az egész világra nagy hatást gyakorolt. Több fiatal nő lép pályára, és több sportoló küzd az egyenjogúságért. A 99-esek képviselték az 1972-ben, a Title IX által elindított mozgalmat. Nevük mostanra valami sokkal nagyobbat jelképez, miközben már a következő generáción a sor, hogy meghatározzák a csapat örökségének eljövendő korszakát.
