Olvasási idő: 4 perc Amikor Bill Bowerman az Oregoni Egyetem futóedzője lett 1948-ban, a legtöbb futócipő még úgy nézett ki, mint egy pár férfi alkalmi bőrcipő, szögekkel a talpán. Bill fáradságot nem ismerve tanult és sajátított el új dolgokat, így az anatómiától kezdve az anyagösszetételig mindenről olvasott, azt keresve, hogyan tudna az akkori dizájnokon javítani. Viszont amikor felkereste a futócipőgyártókat az ötleteivel, alig volt valaki, aki szívesen meghallgatta volna. Így hát Bill maga látott hozzá a munkának. Akár egyedi cipőket eszkábált össze kígyó- és szarvasbőrből vagy épp halpikkelyekből, akár egy meglévő cipőből húzta ki a szegecseket, hogy máshová helyezze őket egy bizonyos futó számára, mindig azt kutatta, hogyan készíthet könnyebb, gyorsabb és minden lépésnél hatékonyabb cipőket.  A Hayward Field, az Oregoni Egyetem legendás futópályája remek próbaterepnek bizonyult a kísérletei kipróbálásához. Billnek volt egy apró irodája a mosoda alatt, amelynek ajtaja épp a pálya nyolcadik, legszélső sávjára nyílt. A legenda szerint Bill gyakran kidugta a fejét az ajtón, és áthívott egy gyanútlan elsőévest, hogy tesztelje legfrissebb találmányát a pályán. Akár napokig tartó lábgörcs, akár nagy áttörés lett a dologból, Bill mindig részletes beszámolót kért a futóitól, és a kapott információkat figyelembe vette a következő verzióhoz.  „Még mindig bajlódok olyan futókkal is, akiket csak hamburgernek hívok. Sosem fognak rekordot dönteni. De a célnak megfelelőek.” — Bill Bowerman Amikor a később olimpiai érmet nyerő maratonfutó, Kenny Moore, aki egyébként az Oregoni Egyetem futója volt, futás közben eltörte a lábát, Bill darabjaira szedte a cipőt, amit viselt, és rájött, hogy a közepén nincs lábboltozat-alátámasztás, és ez idézhette elő Moore lesérülését. Bill újra nekilátott a munkának, és olyan cipőt készített, melynek sarkába és elülső részébe puha szivacsgumit helyezett, valamint párnázott belsőtalppal és kemény gumi külsőtalppal látta el, hogy Kenny kipróbálhassa, amikor felépül. Az eredményt végül Nike Cortez néven ismerte meg a világ, amely a valaha volt egyik legikonikusabb és legkelendőbb futócipő lett.  A Kenny Moore (képünkön) számára készített prototípus ihlette a legendás Nike Cortez cipőt. Az Oregoni Egyetem futóin kívül sokan mások is örülhettek Bill problémamegoldó kényszerének, amely arra sarkallta, hogy a mindennapos apró gondokat kiküszöbölje. Amikor a Hayward Field mosodáit újjáépítették, Bill a munkapadját egy orvosi épület pincéjébe helyezte át, Eugene város belvárosába. Bill az épületben megismert betegek ortopéd igényeihez tervezett különleges cipőket, cserébe pedig a futóit felküldte a röntgenorvosokhoz, hogy részletes felvételeket készítsenek a lábfejük csontozatáról, így minden egyes sportolónak egyéni szegecsmintákat tudott készíteni.  Állítólag Bill sosem akarta, hogy „újítóként” hivatkozzanak rá, jobban szerette, ha „problémamegoldóként” emlegetik. Bár a munkája a cipőtervezés világát fényévekkel segítette előre, felismerte, hogy a valódi újítás sosem légüres térben történik. Először figyelni kell.
