Patta and the Air Max 1 have been cultivating a strong bond which milestones were set in 2009. For its fifth anniversary, the Dutch brand had the opportunity to collaborate with Nike on a whole series of now iconic designs.

For this Inside The Vault, we sat down with Masta Lee, former Patta designer, Magdi Fernandes, co-founder of Archive.DNA and Aruna Vermeulen to share some in-depth insights on the strong history Patta has on the Air Max 1.

The "Chlorophyll" design paid hommage to the very first Air Max 1 that came out in 1987, featuring the original colorblocking.

It still differs from Tinker Hatfield's design by replacing the OG materials with premium nubuck, canvas and denim to make it more street-friendly and resistant to the unpredictable Amsterdam weather.

In 2009, way before every sneaker release became a huge event by itself, the Air Max 1 "Purple Denim" dropped in a very unconventional way : straight out the store, without any prior announcement.

"We wanted to bring back that feeling of just randomly walking into a store and seeing something you’ve never seen before", designer Masta Lee said.

To think about Patta necessarily means thinking about Amsterdam. It’s not a surprise then that the colors of this "Corduroy" remind us of the classic painted wooden doors, seen all over the Dutch capital.

The "Corduroy" discreetly also gets its inspiration from the aesthetic of big Italian luxury brands.

Like every Air Max 1 from this “5th Anniversary” Pack, the “Lucky Green” features two signature elements : the beloved mini-swoosh they took from the iconic “Viotech” Atmos collab (2003),

and a sockliner featuring an artwork based on the 5 Guilder coin, and old but very symbolic Dutch currency.
