The striking two-tone shirt pays tribute to the synergy between the club, its supporters and their city. The blue represents the water that flows from the Fountain of Neptune around which fans gather to celebrate victories, and the orange detailing is taken from the way the city's sunshine reflects off Neptune's trident. The base of the design is an aerial map of Madrid, which is distorted through the famous stripes of the Atlético shirt. This marks the location of the fountain, and further grounds the club to its unique home city.
Founded by engineering students in 1903, Atlético Madrid was originally part of the Athletic Bilbao. Their striped kit came from Bilbao and resembled old mattresses, giving the team its nickname, Colchoneros ("Mattress-makers"). While the shirt came from Bilbao, the crest came from Madrid. At the time, both bears and strawberries were prominent in Madrid, landing them on both the crest of the city and the club. The bear is a fitting emblem for the club's aggressive style on pitch, which has led them to success. With 10 La Liga Championships, just as many Spanish titles, and a double in their 1995/96 season, Atlético Madrid has a winning legacy.
