MEET THE REBELS OF MELBOURNE

Over the last decade a slew of organized runs have started
to change perceptions of running, making it feel somewhat more approachable.

A welcome shake-up of the established scene is well in motion via run crews such as AM:PM.RC.
Read the stories of some of the rebels of Melbourne who are disturbing the running status quo.

Growing up in Newcastle, New South Wales, Dan preferred skateboarding over surfing
and football, a past-time that brought him a lot of his lifelong friends. He began running
around five years ago as a way to de-stress.

“I’d come home and be complaining all the time. It wasn’t good. So, I started running 1-2km to let off some steam. With time I realised that I could put in relatively good distances and an okay pace and from there I was like, I don’t want to just go and run by myself anymore, that’s a little bit boring.”

From the very first run with the AM:PM.RC he felt the same sense of excitement and freedom that he had felt when he first took up skateboarding.

“We met up after work one night to run and it’s dark. I’d never run at night before, but there we were, cutting through the city running streets I would never have thought to run - and having a great time! I thought, this is sick!”

Dan credits AM:PM.RC for a new lease of focus and determination in his life. “I feel like you get less and less complacent with other stuff you want to do. Running really changes your thinking in that sense.”

“As a teenager right through to my mid twenties I was heavily involved in the punk and hardcore scene and skated almost every day. Being surrounded by alternative mindsets and forward thinking crews of people, that took care of each other and stuck together was heavily engrained in me.”

“There’s several designers, artists and photographers in the crew who I’ll bounce ideas off while we are on a run or afterwards when we grab a bite or drink. Sometimes it’s important to get those insights from people that have a bit of distance from what you’re working on. A few of us have even collaborated on some furniture recently.”

“When you're running you start to look at the landscape and you look at light. You remember details. Your focus sharpens and you can build on that and get better at distances and whatever — the numbers are in the background for me. I start to zone out and think of ideas and get that balance I’m looking for from running.”
