# Which Nike Cleats Do the Best Players in the World Wear?
##### Product News
See which Nike cleats — Mercurial, Phantom or Tiempo — the world's best soccer players choose and why.
Last updated: October 20, 2026
6 min read
You’ve been there before. You’re watching a professional soccer game, and for a split second, you catch yourself focused on what’s on Vini Jr.'s feet instead of the score. *Is that the Nike Mercurial, Phantom, or Tiempo he’s wearing?* The fact is, each soccer boot is built for a different type of player, and the best athletes in the world choose the one that matches their playing style.
Below, you’ll find out which Nike boots some of the world’s biggest superstars are wearing on soccer’s biggest stage.
__Quick Takeaways__
- Vinicius Júnior, Lauren James, Désiré Doué, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Alyssa Thompson wear the Nike Mercurial, which is built for speed.
- Erling Haaland and Alexia Putellas wear the Nike Phantom, which is built for precision.
- Jamal Musiala and Kerolin wear the Nike Tiempo, which is built for touch.
- All three franchises will be worn by Nike athletes at the world’s biggest soccer tournament in 2026.
- Each boot is designed for a different style of play, not a different level of player.

## Nike Mercurial: Built for Speed
[](https://www.nike.com/w/soccer-shoes-1gdj0zy7ok)
## Athletes Who Wear Nike Mercurial
- Vinicius Júnior
- Alyssa Thompson
- Cristiano Ronaldo
- Désiré Doué
- Lauren James
The Nike Mercurial[](https://www.nike.com) is all about speed, built for the fastest players in the world. But the game has proven that speed isn’t one-dimensional. Nike offers the Mercurial Superfly to suit the needs of athletes who move with explosive speed, as well as the Mercurial Vapor to support those agile players who rely on quick cuts.
"I love being able to shift quickly and attack the space before defenders can react," James said.
The Nike Mercurial Superfly 11, which launches in June 2026, is ideal for players who emphasize straight-line acceleration. That’s why the Mercurial Superfly is a great fit for speedy forwards like American Alyssa Thompson and Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo. Powered by an Air Zoom unit and ZoomX foam, the latest Mercurial also features a Flyweave upper to keep Superfly wearers locked in.
The Nike Mercurial Vapor 17, which releases in June 2026 alongside the Superfly, is an ideal shoe for athletes with the kind of close-control dribbling in tight spaces that stars like Brazil’s Viní Júnior and England’s Lauren James are known for. At 20% lighter than its predecessor (based on size M9), the Vapor 17 is perfect for agile players reliant on light speed.
## Nike Phantom: Built for Precision
[](https://www.nike.com/w/soccer-shoes-1gdj0zy7ok)
## Athletes Who Wear Nike Phantom
- Erling Haaland
- Alexia Putellas
Two players, same Nike Phantom, but a different expression of precision. For [Erling Haaland](https://about.nike.com/en/newsroom/releases/nike-phantom-6-erling-haaland-player-edition), a striker, scoring goals isn’t just a focus — it’s an inevitability. That’s what makes the Phantom the right fit for the Norwegian star, as it’s designed for the most precise attack by players whose command and confidence on the field is unmatched.
For [Alexia Putellas](http://nike.com/a/alexia-putellas-phantom-6-release-info), a versatile Spanish midfielder who controls the game with precise movements and can also finish the attack, accuracy takes on a different meaning, enabling her to adapt depending on her team’s need.
The Phantom 6 — available in both High and Low versions — includes a special grip in the upper, giving these superstars close control. The off-center lacing helps clear the striking zone for cleaner shots and passes. Haaland and Putellas debuted their signature Phantom boots in 2025 and 2026, respectively.
## Nike Tiempo: Built for Touch
[](https://www.nike.com/w/soccer-shoes-1gdj0zy7ok)
## Athletes Who Wear Nike Tiempo
- Jamal Musiala
- Kerolin Nicoli
- Catarina Macario
Players like Jamal Musiala of Germany, Kerolin Nicoli of Brazil, and Catarina Macario of the United States are all known for their unique dribbling, ball control, and creativity when they’re on the field. That’s what makes the Nike Tiempo ideal for these superstars, as well as athletes who aspire to play like them. Wraparound TechLeather is at the forefront of the [Nike Tiempo Maestro](https://www.nike.com/a/nike-tiempo-maestro-release-info), which is not only soft but also gives athletes a close boot-to-ball feel.
“Maestro is the perfect balance between the modern, light boots and iconic, premium leather — with a bit more flair,” Musiala said.
The Tiempo also features a bladed and conical stud mix — traction designed for sharp turns and changes in speed. The boot performs well in humid conditions, ideal for the world’s biggest soccer tournament in summer 2026.
## What Boots Will Players Wear on the World’s Biggest Stage?
All three Nike franchises will be on-field at the world’s biggest soccer tournament in North America in the summer of 2026. Nike's three-franchise boot system offers players options to match their selection to how they play, not just where they play. That makes for a great fit for a tournament hosted across three countries on a range of surfaces and in a range of conditions.
The Tiempo Maestro, for example, was tested in humid conditions ahead of the event. Summer 2026 also marks the first time in eight years that the Mercurial Superfly and the Mercurial Vapor boots are fundamentally different.
