Built around the two things Kobe demanded from everything, precision and efficiency, it became the first shoe of his next chapter. And players in the league adopted it. Within a season, the A.D. was the most-worn shoe in the NBA. “It's a new era once you have a player retire and still be part of the brand,” said Jessica Davenport, Kobe product manager. “A lot of the time, the athlete on the court drives that visibility. But this model was athlete-led. Players were able to show their creativity through the shoe while using the platform Kobe set up.” That history is exactly why the A.D. earned the Protro treatment. “This generation of players is nostalgic for the A.D.,” Davenport said. “When we took them out on the road, athletes kept telling us, 'I remember these. I played in these.' It felt like the right time to bring it back and make it better for this generation.” ## The Original Sports Car With a Modern Engine Protro means [performance retro](https://www.nike.com/a/what-is-protro), a concept Kobe invented himself: Keep the design sacred, rebuild the engine. The A.D.'s design didn't need a single line changed. Those clean sweeps across the upper trace a racetrack, Kobe's nod to how a sports car hugs a curve at speed. They're all still there. “It has the nostalgic look you originally fell in love with, and a modernized underfoot performance sensation that you’ll appreciate,” said Elmar Ariola, Kobe product developer. That rebuild took two years of testing and iteration, including sitting down with the designers who created the original A.D., then putting prototypes on feet at tournaments and events until the ride felt right. Protro is stocked at local retailers, so you can pick it up, lace it up and decide for yourself. “This is for our everyday hooper,” Davenport said. “Whether you're elite or playing in your local leagues, it's durable, it's a great fit and it looks amazing. Kids can walk into a store, try it on and form their own opinion.” [](https://www.nike.com/w/kobe-basketball-3glsmzpgd6) ## Kobe A.D. Protro Release Info The Nike Kobe A.D.
