How to support your kids from the sidelines
  1. Be their biggest fans.

    As a kid on the basketball court, Matt remembers seeing his parents give him two thumbs up. “It was the best feeling in the world,” he says. “They would always give me the most confidence.” When delivering feedback, he says to emphasize positivity and be constructive. Celebrate with them when games go well, and uplift them when they don’t go as they had hoped.
  2. Put yourself in their shoes.

    Matt believes that staying aware is a simple fix for moments of conflict. If he can sense a kid is upset, he’ll ask them about it instead of adding to their struggle. “When I understand what is going on in someone’s mind, I can help propel them toward a positive solution.” The key, he says, is simple—really listening.
  3. Follow their lead.

    Matt knows it’s essential to create space for kids to make their own decisions—starting with what sports they want to play. “Give them a list of five sports and see what interests them—from team sports to solo sports like golf, tennis...even chess.” Help them identify opportunities, but leave the final decision up to them.
