Tiger Woods

Birthplace: Cypress, CA
Birth Date: December 30, 1975
Home: Jupiter, FL
College: Stanford University
Turned Pro: 1996

Eldrick (Tiger) Woods ranks among the greatest golfers of all time. Since turning professional in 1996—following a record third consecutive U.S. Amateur title—he's won 79 PGA Tour events. His 14 major titles—four Masters Tournaments, four PGA Championships, three U.S. Open Championships and three Open Championships—also rank second all-time, behind Jack Nicklaus' total of 18. With his victory at the Masters in 2001, Tiger became the first player ever to hold all four professional majors at the same time, an accomplishment that came to be known as the "Tiger Slam." He is only the second player (with Nicklaus) to win the career grand slam three times, and is the career money list leader on the PGA Tour with more than $107 million in official tournament winnings.

During a run of unequalled dominance from 2005–10, Tiger was ranked No. 1 in the world golf rankings for a record 281 weeks. He reclaimed the top spot in March 2013, adding to his record of holding the No. 1 ranking for more total weeks than any other player. Tiger has been named PGA Tour Player of the Year a record ten times, won the Vardon Trophy for lowest scoring average on tour a record eight times, and led the PGA Tour money list for a record nine seasons. Playing in his first major as a professional at the 1997 Masters, Tiger became the tournament's youngest-ever  champion (at the age of 21 years, three months and 14 days) and the first man of African or Asian heritage to win a major championship. Tiger holds or shares the record for low score in relation to par at the Masters, Open and PGA championships; he held the U.S. Open scoring record for more than a decade before it was eclipsed in 2011.

The Tiger Woods Foundation was established in 1996 to create and support community-based programs that improve the health, education and welfare of children. He serves as host of the AT&T National and Chevron World Challenge tournaments in support of the foundation, which has raised more than $75 million so far. Tiger Woods Design, launched in 2006, has several golf courses under construction worldwide.

Tiger's late father, Earl Woods, taught him how to play golf. His mother, Kultida, is a native of Thailand. He was nicknamed "Tiger" after a Vietnamese soldier to whom Earl, who was a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, had given the same nickname. Tiger has two children, daughter Sam and son Charlie.
