Michelle showed promise as a golfer from a very young age. She began playing at age four, and at age 10 became the youngest player at the time to qualify for the Women's U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. In 2002, Michelle won the women's division of the Hawaii State Open by 13 shots, and became the youngest player at the time to qualify for an LPGA event. She was the fourth (and youngest) female to compete in a PGA Tour event at the 2004 Sony Open, missing the cut despite carding a second-round 68.
Michelle turned professional in 2005, a week before her 16th birthday, and joined the LPGA Tour full-time in 2009. Her first tour victory came later that year at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational, and she added another win at the 2010 CN Canadian Women's Open. During the 2011 and 2012 seasons, Michelle has 12 top-25 finishes.
