David had an exceptional amateur career as he was the U.S. Junior Amateur champion, then, at Georgia Tech, he was a four-time first-team All-American, two-time ACC Player of the Year and 1993 National Player of the Year. He continued his success as a professional almost immediately, as he had 5 second place finishes on the PGA Tour in 1995-96. Then, in 1997, David broke through, winning three events including the Tour Championship. 1998-2000 saw David win 9 more Tour events including the NEC World Series of Golf, the Mercedes Championships and the Players Championship. Along with those string of wins, David become the world number 1 golfer in 1999. In 2001, David had perhaps his greatest victory as he won The Open Championship. Other career highlights include T-2 finishes at the Masters in 1998 and 2011, T-2 at the 2009 U.S. Open, and T-2 at the 2010 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.
