What the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program has achieved in its short life would put most 22 year-olds to shame.
Nike launched the Reuse-A-Shoe program in 1990. Since then, over 28 million pairs of shoes have been collected and given a second life, remade into things like sport courts, tracks and playgrounds.
How does it work?
1. Old athletic shoes are collected in Reuse-a-Shoe bins located in Nike retail locations, and scrap materials are collected from our manufacturing facilities.
2. The old athletic shoes and scrap materials are sent through grinders, slicers, and sorters, turning them into 3 main materials: rubber, foam and fiber. We call this new material Nike Grind.
3. Nike Grind rubber is used in athletic tracks, weight room flooring, soccer fields and playground surfacing. Nike Grind foam gets a new lease on life in synthetic and wood flooring for outdoor and indoor basketball, volleyball and tennis courts.
