JUPITER DESPHY
THE BIO
Jupiter Desphy’s first bicycle was a no-brand metallic blue and white number made to resemble a motorcycle. We’re talking full-sized chrome fenders, a mock gas tank, training wheels, and of course, handle bar streamers. Basically, he has been riding dirty since the tender age of five. Soon, training wheels gave way to BMX bikes, which in turn gave way to a skateboard – which can be credited for getting Jupiter from Las Vegas to Los Angeles in 1993.
With a long-standing love for all things artistic, he found design jobs at a myriad of companies. Creative jobs led to creative friends and in 2005, Jupiter and pals formed the Casual Suspects Bicicleta Crue (CS). Sort of like a book club, except instead of reading it was riding, and instead of books it was BMX. Jupiter soon found himself on a fixed gear bicycle and was immediately addicted to the speed, freedom and uncontrollable-yet-controlled feelings.
Today, Jupiter pays his rent as the designer, website- developer and all-around jack-of-all-trades for Undefeated. He also moonlights as a photographer, DJ and sometime journalist.
THE TIEMPO
"Black is my favorite color and knowing that black shoes could potentially match well with black hats, black pants, and black shirts, they would fall in line with the rest of my already massive laundry pile.
My first concern was visibility because while riding at night, oncoming traffic is generally the most dangerous kind due to the the slim profile of a cyclist. So, a light reflective material was placed on the tongue. The outside Swoosh got the same treatment (Blasting through a red light at night, I’d want the cab driver to know that I was there and that it were Nikes that got me through the intersection - Taxi’s hate us.).
Knowing that the toebox lives entirely inside pedal cages, the use of laminated high abrasion resistant material would be beneficial. Suede was the material of choice for the rest of the Tiempo because of its overall strength and resistance to dings, scratches and scuffs. For the heel, yellow was chosen to break up the color and its high visibility during the day and the heels panels also use the reflective material. If we’re not going to give up our lane while in traffic, the motorists may as well enjoy the show. I added purple in the interior and footbed and borrowed a design cue that Eddie Cruz called out on the UNDFTD AF1’s - An alternate Swoosh color on the inside.
Representing the city that I live in, LOS ANGELES, I added in some pops of color with the yellow, white and purple. By the time you read this, LA will have taken the ring and sent Orlando packing. The end product looks pretty darn good, but it’s functional to a greater degree and that’s what is most important."
