Venezuelan golfer Jhonattan Vegas knew very little English when he arrived in Houston to start his golf career in the US. He picked up the game by playing with a broomstick and a rock, and eventually began playing at a 9-hole course near his home originally built for oil camp employees. He coached fellow countrymen and legendary golfer, Franci Betancourt, who was a three-time World Cup participant for Venezuela in 1966, 1968 and 1975. Jhonattan’s brother Julio is currently a freshman playing on the University of Texas golf team.
