South African Charl Schwartzel turned professional in 2002 at the age of 18, and qualified for the European Tour later that year, becoming the second youngest South African golfer to do so. In 2005 he prevailed at the Dunhill Championship in South Africa, finishing 52nd on the Order of Merit, and in first place on the Sunshine Tour. His success continued in 2006, finishing the season in 18th place on the Order of Merit and climbing to 57th in the Official World Golf Rankings. In 2007 he won the Open de Espana, and moved into the world top 40. In 2008, he once again achieved success with a win at the Madrid Masters.
