Considered Design

Considered Design is Nike's ongoing commitment to design without compromise – to performance or the planet. It is a continually progressing standard, applied every day to everything we do.

Through Considered Design, we envision a future where the shoes you wear today become the shoes, shirts or equipment you use tomorrow. This is closed loop manufacturing, where nothing is wasted; everything is kept in play.

For Nike the first step towards closed loop manufacturing is the Considered Index, which evaluates materials, waste, solvents, garment treatment. The Index takes into account current knowledge to help designers find the best solution for both athletes and the planet.

To reflect the commitment to design innovation for performance and the planet, Nike has established company-wide targets for Considered Design.

2011:
ALL Nike footwear will meet or exceed baseline Considered Design standards.
This will result in a 17% reduction in footwear waste, a 20% increase in the the use of environmentally preferred materials and maintaining Nike's 95% reduction in VOCs (volatile organic compounds).

2015:
ALL Nike apparel will meet or exceed baseline Considered Design standards.

2020:
ALL Nike equipment will join the ranks of Considered Design.

*Only products that exceed Considered Design's baseline requirements will be labeled as Considered
