COMPANY INFORMATION
Where can I get a copy of Nike Canada's annual report or other corporate information? - All available corporate information is located at http://www.nikebiz.com
What is the history of the Nike swoosh? - Nike, pronounced NI-KEY, is the winged goddess of victory. According to Greek mythology Nike sat at the side of Zeus, the ruler of the Olympian pantheon of Mount Olympus.
A symbol of victorious encounters, the goddess Nike presided over history's earliest battlefields. Today, Nike is still synonymous with honored conquest. Nike is the 20th century footwear and athletic apparel that lifts the world's greatest athletes to new levels of mastery and achievement. The Nike "Swoosh" embodies the spirit of the winged goddess who inspired the most courageous and chivalrous warriors at the dawn of civilization.
The swoosh logo is a graphic design created by Caroline Davidson in 1971. Caroline Davidson was a student at Portland State University interested in advertising when she met Phil Knight who was teaching accounting classes at the university.
Caroline began doing freelance work for Phil's company. Phil asked Caroline to design a logo that could be placed on the side of a shoe. She handed him the swoosh and he handed her $35. In the spring of 1972, the first shoe with the Nike swoosh was introduced.
I'm a student doing a project on Nike, where can I get more information about the company, advertising and products?
- Please check out www.nike.com or www.nikebiz.com for more information about NIKE - the company, products and advertising. The nikebiz.com website has information ranging from the history of the swoosh to copies of past Nike Annual reports for investors, while nike.com is the gateway to NIKE websites all over the world.
Does Nike use child labour? - Nike cares deeply about every individual who works on our products. Everyone wants to know that the shoes and clothing we buy for ourselves and our loved ones are made under safe and fair working conditions. We want you to know that our company is doing everything possible to continually improve conditions in the factories that produce our products.
Because we recognize that we have a responsibility to make sure that the people who manufacture our products are treated with fairness, dignity, and respect, here are some of the actions we have taken:
- Nike forbids child labour in factories that make Nike products. Our code of conduct and policies state that no new workers under 18 years of age are eligible in footwear factories and no new workers under 16 years of age in factories that manufacture other Nike products. The standards are similar to those in North America and meets and/or exceeds that of international labour organizations.
- Nike has raised cash wages for entry-level workers making footwear in Indonesia by 70 percent during the past 2 years. Jobs in Nike contract facilities provide opportunities to build a lifestyle and life skills that are not typically available in other wage-earning areas where our products are manufactured. Many Nike factories also provide housing, transportation, health care, and nutrition benefits;
- We developed safe, water-based processes that have improved the air quality in our footwear factories. We even shared this information with our competitors so that all workers, not just workers making Nike products, will benefit from these processes;
- We started a program that aims to create better opportunities for people who make Nike products. We offer after-work education programs, including middle and high school equivalency courses, for workers in many Nike footwear factories. By 2002, all Nike factories will offer such programs;
- Nike joined the Global Alliance for Communities and Workers, an organization conducting worker assessments and community development programs in Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia. The Global Alliance's first report was released on September 7, 2000, detailing worker attitudes in Thailand and Vietnam. Global Alliance independent assessment teams from Atma Jaya University in Indonesia are currently talking directly to Indonesian workers about their factory experiences and their Indonesia-specific needs.
- We are especially sensitive to women's issues since a large number of women work in our factories. We have healthcare clinics specifically to help pregnant women do their jobs safely. We also have a special loan program that encourages women in factory communities to start their own businesses including pig farming and making rice pastry for spring rolls.
- Nike has placed user-friendly information on http://www.nikebiz.com. This information includes: the actual results of factory monitoring reports conducted by our external monitors, PriceWaterhouseCoopers; the names and addresses of factories producing collegiate licensed apparel; and unedited reports by 16 students who visited over 90% of factories producing collegiate licensed product this past spring.
- Nike Endorses the United Nations' Global Compact to operate around the world - in a manner defined by nine principles drawn from the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, the core standards of the International Labor Organization, and the Rio Declaration on the environment and development.
We realize that there is still a great amount of work ahead and we encourage you to follow our progress closely. Nike will continue to communicate with anyone who is concerned about these important issues. We also encourage you to visit our website at http://www.nikebiz.com to learn more about Nike's ideas and what we are doing to improve working conditions, the environment, and opportunities around the world.
