Perfection comes not when you’ve added everything, but when there’s nothing left to take away. Nike Flyknit was inspired by runners craving a shoe with the snug, and virtually unnoticed, fit of a sock. To do this, we first had to forget everything we knew about how a footwear upper is made.
In hindsight it sounds simple and straightforward. At the time it was a messy, beautiful burst of creativity and pure force of will. The multi-year mission brought together teams of designers, engineers and programmers to create the technology needed to make a knit upper with static properties for structure and durability. Next the precise placement of support, flexibility and breathability—all in one layer—was refined. The result is a featherweight, form-fitting and virtually seamless upper.
The revolutionary knit construction process of the Nike Flyknit Lunar 1+ allows for a lightweight upper that reduces footwear waste by an average of 80% compared to traditional production. The single layer upper is made entirely from an ultralight thread of special yarn that’s fed into a proprietary knitting machine, creating a portion of the upper that is knitted as one piece. Nike Flyknit technology in the upper reduces waste because it does not have to be cut like traditional footwear manufacturing, making the shoe incredibly efficient to produce. We’re talking a lean, green, performance machine.
The Nike Flyknit Lunar 1+ doesn’t stop there. Its laces feature 30% recycled polyester, the inks are water based and the sock liner uses recycled materials. 100% water based adhesives are also used in the midsole and outsole to reduce volatile organic compounds.
